Surprising Research From Europe’s 2-Year Study
In a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, (2) researchers studied 70 overweight postmenopausal women for 24 months.
Each of the women were over 50 and had an average body mass index (BMI) of 27.
A healthy BMI range runs between 18.5 and 24.9, with a higher BMI linked with an increased risk of heart attack, diabetes and other health problems. (3)
The group of 70 women were put on either the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations diet.
This is a set of standard nutritional guidelines used by Nordic countries for decades, or on the Paleo diet.
And here’s the best news: Unlike what many women think, diets don’t need to be excessively restrictive!
In the study, the women were given “free reign,” essentially allowed to eat anything they wanted.
Eat as much as they wanted, as long as it followed the dietary guidelines of the diet they were assigned.
There was no calorie counting, keeping track of this-or-that, or drinking specialized diet smoothies or supplements.
In the end, both diet groups were successful at losing weight and not gaining the weight.
But one group was the clear winner: Women over 50 who ate according to the principles of the Paleo diet lost more than 50 percent more weight than those who followed the standard government-endorsed “healthy diet.”
And if you’re worried not just about your weight but also your overall health, postmenopausal women who ate Paleo lost a significant amount of abdominal fat.
